James Augustine Aloysius Joyce
(February 2nd 1884 - January 13th 1941)
James Joyce was an Irish writer, considered to be one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. He is best known for his landmark novel Ulysses and its highly controversial successor Finnegans Wake, as well as the short story collection Dubliners and the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916).(*Wikipedia on our Book*)
Although he spent most of his life outside of Ireland, most of his novels take place within Dublin. As well, most of his novels deal with his own personal struggles with the Irish Roman Catholic Church. More specifically he deals with those struggles through his alter ego Stephen Dedalus, the main character in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

Another criticism of Portrait. It's short, and has no real information about who wrote it, but it gives good ideas about it's structure as a novel, how it relates to Joyce's life, etc.
